Ode~!” The first photographs in a while

I have returned to Africa from the blazing heat of Japan. I figured it would be hot here as well, but the mornings and evenings are so cool that it makes me, who can’t take the heat, wonder if this is really Africa. It seems autumn has finally come to Japan as well. There is no beautiful fall in Uganda. Please enjoy it, and watch out for bears!
I asked children to pose for pictures with the photographs and illustrated letters that you gave me while I was in Japan as well as the New Year’s cards and other items that arrived while I was gone.
As the children move up to higher grades, they get busier and it’s harder to get them all together for photos. So, we took photos of them alone or in twos or threes. Odi! (Here we say “odi” (ground nut paste, a popular food) instead of “cheese.”) (Their grade in school is in parentheses.)

An occasional pleasure – snack time! The children never have a chance to eat individually wrapped sweets (too expensive!), so even the bigger kids had trouble getting the wrappers off.

Latabu Jackline (8th) entered secondary school this year after getting good scores on the Primary Leaving Examination. She appeared in her new uniform for the first time.

Wokorach Dick should have been in his fourth year of secondary school, the final year of O Levels, but the school at which he finished his third year of secondary school suddenly closed. On top of that, he was affected by changes in Uganda’s educational system (no remedial measure) and had to repeat his third year. But he is making good use of this opportunity to improve his ability. When he has time, he works as a library staff member and is a big help.

Our new staff member Cindy passed her O Levels last year and is preparing to tackle the A Levels. She is also saving up for her tuition. She is great at working with the students and interacting with the little kids. The two watermelon-design beach balls I brought back from Japan were bitten and deflated within three days. The toddlers here have strong arms and strong teeth! Their voices are loud too!.

Since 2019, four people connected with the library (staff, students supported by the library, guardians) have died of this disease. Three more people are getting regular treatment. There is no cure.

The lives of Akena Francis (3rd) and Komagumu Emmanuel (1st) have been in turmoil since Akena’s father, who was also Komagumu’s grandfather, passed away. For a long time, they were not able to come to the library, but they have finally returned.

Oola Peter (4th), Okema Denish (3rd), and Omara Oscar (6th) are cousins who have all lost their parents. They call their grandmother “Mama.”

I ran into Ms. Molly! She was working at the Japanese embassy when we applied for a grant through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Projects to construct the new library building and was a big help to us then. After that she became a member of Parliament and plans to run for re-election in January. In order to prepare for that, she had returned to her home district of Lamwo, north of Kitgum. Baba Ogen So often says, “I wonder how Molly is doing.” So, it’s too bad he wasn’t here.
