A New Year’s Greeting

Apwoyo Kato Mwaka!=Happy New Year!

This is the target year for the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals established by the United Nations in 2000. As you can see in the photo, we have a poster up in our library promoting this effort. Whenever visitors ask why girls have priority and get preferential treatment in our library, I have them read the poster and talk to them about these goals. In that connection, as I noted in my blog of December 24, I received e-mail messages from several people about the speeches delivered by this year’s Nobel Peace Prize winners, and I would like to take this opportunity to share a few of my thoughts on education. Please feel free to offer comments.

Education is essential to those who believe that merely eating, sleeping and procreating does not make for a fulfilling life. The ability to inherit the wisdom of humankind, a legacy that has been bequeathed equally to all, to think and act for oneself, to decide how to live and to create one’s own life – all of these start with learning to read and write.

Some people believe that educating everyone has drawbacks because there will inevitably be those who will thereby become aware of society’s unreasonableness, unfairness and inconsistency, become radicalized and perhaps even resort to violence. But that is the result of problems with those providing the education and its content. First of all, who will decide which children shall be educated and which shall not? And when will these decisions be made?

It is said that: “College is for those who can’t go even if they want to.” Put another way: “Education is for those who can’t get an education even though they want one.” A sage once said, “It is impossible to build one’s own happiness on the unhappiness of others.” Tesse must be the basic philosophy of education.

I believe that it is the responsibility and duty of those of us who managed to get an education to provide the same opportunity to the next generation.

From that standpoint, failing to give girls a chance for an education because of physical and emotional poorness means abandoning our responsibility to more than half of humanity.

The countries of Africa, including Uganda, are still not providing opportunities for all children, especially girls, to learn.

しかし、MDGsのポスターには、 “Women are the key to reducing poverty… Investing in women makes economic sense and is a prerequisite for development.”

When it was suggested to me that I call my organization Poverty Relief Africa, I balked at the idea because I did not have the resources to provide a lot of supplies or cash. But as it says on our MDG poster, “Women are the key to reducing poverty… Investing in women makes economic sense and is a prerequisite for development.” But “investing” means not only providing material goods and money. I have become convinced that the key to poverty relief is giving children a chance to learn.

I intend to carry on with my activities again this year in the hope that children who share my sentiments will emerge from those we support and will contribute to the local community sometime in the future.

Your continued support in the new year would be appreciated.
